U.S. Senator Cory Booker to Speak at Bloomfield College's 144th Commencement

BLOOMFIELD, NJ - United States Senator Cory A. Booker will speak at Bloomfield College's Commencement on May 19. Booker will also receive an honorary degree during the 144th commencement.

"We are delighted and honored that Senator Booker will be participating in our commencement as we approach the 150th Anniversary of Bloomfield College," stated Richard A. Levao, college president. "He has been a longtime supporter of this college and its mission, dating back to his service as mayor of Newark."

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to not only deliver a speech at Bloomfield College this year, but to also to receive an honorary degree from such a respected New Jersey institution," said Sen. Booker.  "Bloomfield College has long stood as a beacon of academic excellence and civic engagement, and I thank the students and faculty for this humbling opportunity."

From 2006 until 2013, Sen. Booker was the mayor of Newark. During his seven-year tenure, the city of Newark saw economic growth unmatched in decades and a substantial decline in overall crime.

Bloomfield College was recently ranked number one in New Jersey and number 20 nationally in promoting the social and economic mobility of its low-income students to high economic achievement, including top economic quintiles, has welcomed the Senator to campus before. Sen. Booker previously spoke at a ceremony announcing a major grant to the college and taught an evening class at the college.

"We look forward to presenting the senator with an honorary degree and listening to his remarks," added Levao. "It will provide a treasured memory to our graduating seniors and their loved ones."
