EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ -- The East Brunswick Arts Coalition (EBAC) will launch its “Summer Stage Series” with the production of the musical “Footloose.” The production will mark the first time in more than 60 years that the Coalition’s partner, Playhouse 22, will stage a large scale outdoor musical.
“Our community theatre has a great local theatre program anchored at the Community Arts Center and through Playhouse 22 productions. With the creation of the new East Brunswick Arts Coalition, we will be able to support an even more expansive offering to the community such as the ‘Summer Stage Series’ performance of Footloose,” said East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen.
The Footloose production will take place under the stars in the outdoor amphitheater at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center located at 721 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick. In preparation for the show, the town has outfitted the stage with state-of-the-art lighting and sounds systems.
Performances are July 25-27 and Aug. 1-3. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The show begins at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $7 per person, available online at FootlooseEB.com; by calling the Playhouse 22 box office at (732) 254-3939; or in-person the day of the show. Food trucks will be on site for guests to purchase a food or drinks before the show.
Attendees must bring a lawn chairs (no more than 40 inches in height) to make themselves comfortable while watching the performance. Blankets or beach towels are not permitted.
“Members of the Arts Coalition and theatre are excited to see these great performances from members of our very own community. It promises to be several great nights of music, laughter and fun under the stars,” said Marla Camins, president of EBAC.
Based on the 1984 film with Kevin Bacon, John Lithgow, and Lori Singer, the musical "Footloose” is about a teenager from Chicago, Ren McCormack, who moves to a small western town to live with his mother, aunt, and uncle. McCormack’s character in the show attempts to overturn a local ban on dancing that leads to conflict with a minister whose son was killed in an accident returning after a night of dancing. Popular songs from the original film as well as others from the Broadway production are features of the musical production.
This local performance of Footloose is being produced by Playhouse 22 under the direction of Christian Carrara with choreography by Raven Dunbar and musical direction by Marty Alen Angstreich.
