EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - Monday, March 23, 2020 - The following update was received by TAPinto East Brunswick from Mayor Brad Cohen today:

I have hesitated giving out township data regarding the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 because we all expect that these numbers will rise and, as such, they have no value. We should all be aware that the vast majority of cases are not known and so any reported number of cases is a gross under-representation of the true number of people with COVID-19. This is because:

  1. Most people are asymptomatic carriers who either do not know that they are carriers or have such limited symptoms that they do not know that they have disease. These are the folks from which are you most likely to get COVID-19. These are the reasons for social distancing and that is why we are on a shut-down throughout the region.
  2. Many people with symptoms cannot get testing, despite the increase in the number of testing centers.
  3. People without the criterion for testing, will NOT be tested.

With that as a backdrop, these are the numbers of confirmed cases and deaths as of last night and/or this morning:

I believe that we need to remain strong and calm through this crisis. We need to take the precautions recommended by the state, county and the township. Our greatest risk is from ourselves – we need to follow the recommendations and take personal responsibility to protect ourselves, our families and friends, and the public. You can find information, updates, and important links regarding COVID-19 on our township website.
