FREEHOLD, NJ — East Freehold was the center of a 3.1 magnitude earthquake early this morning that could be felt throughout Central Jersey, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck at about 2 a.m. on September 9, triggering an influx of nearly 6,000 reports from people who felt the rumbling in at least seven counties in New Jersey, including Middlesex County. There were no reports of injuries or damage, USGS said.
In Piscataway, some residents took to social media reporting they either heard the rumbling or felt the tremors pass through the area. Others said they were unaware of the earthquake until official reports were announced.
“I was awake between 2 and 3 and things on our closet fell but I didn’t feel the tremors,” Monna Doligosa who lives in the Lake Nelson area said in a Facebook group. “Light stuff like stacked paper goods fell off the shelves and bells jingled. I thought we had a burglar.”
The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office at 5 a.m. posted on social media that the earthquake was in proximity to its 911 Communications Center on Kozloski Road in Freehold, which received 125 calls within a half-hour period. There was no interruption of service or damage, the office said.
Since the first known earthquake epicenter occurred in New Jersey on November 30, 1783, a total of 98 felt earthquakes have been centered in New Jersey through 2016, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.
The strongest earthquake centered in New Jersey was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake that took place on August 23, 1938 at 5:04 a.m. This quake had an epicenter southeast of Trenton, and it was felt from Jersey City to northern Delaware, it said.
Although it did not occur in New Jersey, the last quake felt in the state was in August 2011, when a 5.8 magnitude quake was centered in Virginia. For more information on the quake or to report that you felt it, visit the USGS website by clicking here.
