Atlantic Health System’s Dr. Linda Gillam Recognized with American College of Cardiology’s Top Honor

MORRISTOWN, NJ - The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has recognized Linda D. Gillam, MD, MPH, FACC, the Dorothy and Lloyd Huck Chair of Cardiovascular Medicine at Morristown Medical Center/Atlantic Health System, with the 2018 Gifted Educator Award.

The Gifted Educator Award is presented to a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology who has demonstrated innovative, outstanding teaching characteristics and compassionate qualities and because of these attributes has made major contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine at the local and/or regional level. Gillam will be recognized for these achievements on March 12 during the ACC’s 67th Annual Scientific Session.

“Linda Gillam’s dedication to improving cardiovascular health and enhancing patient care is a testament to her expertise and professionalism,” said ACC President Mary Norine Walsh, MD, FACC. “Gillam’s hard work truly shows her determination to make a lasting positive impact in the cardiovascular field. I am proud to present her with the Gifted Educator Award.”

“I am so happy for Dr. Gillam, and I cannot think of a more appropriate honoree for this award,” said Judy Wei-Ming Hung, MD, Associate Director, Echocardiography, Division of Cardiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and one of Dr. Gillam’s mentees. “She is tremendously talented and despite having many, many important responsibilities, she has always, without question, made the time and effort to be a mentor. She is an amazing trailblazer and role model, and I am so grateful for her advice, encouragement and assistance in my own career.”

Dr. Gillam is the Chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line for Atlantic Health System and Professor of Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. Under Dr. Gillam’s leadership, Atlantic Health System and Morristown Medical Center have become nationally recognized as leaders in the cardiology space, attracting best-in-class talent, state-of-the-art technology and clinical trials.

She previously served as Medical Director of the Cardiac Valve Program and Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University. She is an expert in echocardiography, valvular heart disease and heart disease in women. She has lectured nationally and internationally on these and related topics.

Dr. Gillam is Past President of the American Society of Echocardiography and a former member of both the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology. She currently chairs the College Partners in Quality Committee. She also chairs the Women in Cardiology Committee of the American Heart Association and serves on the leadership committee of the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology. She is immediate Past President of the National Board of Echocardiography. She is senior guest editor for Circulation:  Cardiovascular Imaging and a member of the editorial boards of Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

She has authored more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and 20 book chapters and is co-editor (with Catherine Otto, MD) of Advanced Echocardiographic Techniques and (with Drs. Scott Solomon and Tina Wu) of Essential Echocardiography: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, two leading textbooks in echocardiography.

She is a graduate of McGill University and Queen’s University, Canada, and Columbia University, NY. She completed her cardiology fellowship training at the University of Toronto and Massachusetts General Hospital.
