Burglary in Madison Hill Section Sparks Criminal Investigation

MADISON, NJ - On Feb. 9 police were called to a hill section residential home off Woodland Avenue at approx. 8p.m. after homeowners were alerted by their alarm company of a break in.

The suspect (s) broke into the home through forced entry of the front door.  "The electrical meter was forcibly extracted from the side of the house and the power and phone wires were cut,"  said Lt. John Miscia of the Madison Police Department.  "It appears the front door was pried open with a tool and forced open once the power outage caused darkness to fall on front porch area."

There is no evidence that anything was taken from the Madison home.  "We think the suspects were alarmed when a battery back-up to the wireless system in the home went off and fled."

"The suspects entered the home within a half hour of the residents leaving.  The home's alarm was set. Given the timing it appears as though they had been casing the home. Whoever did it was experienced," said Miscia.

There were two additional Morris County break-ins that occurred earlier Feb. 9 in other jurisdictions with the same MO, "the crimes have similarities, we believe the incidents are related," said Miscia.

The Morris County Sheriff was called in with the canine dog units to investigate and the case remains active within the criminal investigation unit.

The incident in Madison came on a day school was closed and many residents were home from work after 8 inches of snowfall.

"We are always in residential neighborhoods patrolling, but we have stepped things up," added Miscia. "We continue to ask residents to be vigilant about reporting anything out of the ordinary in their neighborhood.  If you see something, say something. If you see activity in your neighborhood, a parked car that is not normally there call us. Do not hesitate."

If anyone has any information about this event or was witness to suspicious activity Feb. 9 please contact Detective Paul Papamarkos at 973-593-3014.
