WARREN, N.J.- Judge Jose Linares, an adjunct Professor at Seton Hall School of Law, a strong supporter of education in New Jersey, and the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, has agreed to become the newest member of Cento Amici, a New Jersey philanthropic organization that funds scholarships in the state, the organization announced today. Judge Linares will be inducted at Cento Amici’s annual dinner on Monday, October 9, 2017 in Warren, N.J.

“I am deeply honored to become Cento Amici's newest member. My parents always placed paramount importance on education and the societal responsibility of helping those in need. It is extremely gratifying to know that I am becoming a member of an organization that embodies both of those ideals," said Judge Linares.

Linares has had an astounding journey since his birth in Havana, Cuba, to currently serving as the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. Judge Linares was nominated to the court in 2002 by President George W. Bush and in May of 2017 became the Chief Judge. He is the first Hispanic Chief Federal District Judge in New Jersey history and the first Cuban born Chief District Judge in the country.

As a young boy, his family escaped Cuba to Spain and then came to the United States. Linares first became interested in the law after an encounter with a lawyer that helped the family after its arrival in the United States. It was then that he first realized the important role of the law in our society and his passion for the law was born.

Linares grew up in Newark and attended Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair. He received his undergraduate degree from Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University) in 1975 and a Juris Doctor from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 1978. After graduation, he was a supervising attorney of the New York City Department of Investigation from 1978 to 1980. He was in private practice in New Jersey from 1980 to 2000. He served as a judge on the Essex County Superior Court from 2000 to 2002. Among other philanthropic organizations, Judge Linares has served on the Boards of Immaculate Conception High School, Essex County College, and Job Haines Home for Seniors.

“Judge Linares has been a friend of Cento Amici for years. His record and reputation are unparalleled,” said Robert Zito, founder and president of Cento Amici. “We are thrilled that he is becoming a member of our organization as we continue to provide support for students in need.”

Since its founding in 1989, Cento Amici has donated more than $1.1 million directly to New Jersey scholarship programs as well as an endowed fund for future scholarships.  This year, $110K was awarded and 52 scholarships were funded at Montclair State University, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Raritan Valley Community College, Union County College, Saint Peter’s Prep, Saint Anthony High School, Roselle Catholic High School and St. Benedict’s Preparatory School.

Judge Linares joins a membership that includes Chief Justice Samuel Alito, Medal of Honor recipient Col. Jack Jacobs, Hall of Fame basketball coach Bob Hurley, and other notable figures from government, business and entertainment.

Cento Amici is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, community-based member organization dedicated to providing need-based scholarship assistance to qualified New Jersey students. Its goal is to heighten the educational opportunities for those who are most underserved by existing need-based programs.

Please visit www.centoamici.org for information about purchasing tickets to the dinner.
