CHATHAM, NJ - There is domestic violence occurring in every community and more than 2,000 incidents happen in Morris County each year alone.

That was part of the message given by Regina Braham of the JBWS (Jersey Battered Women's Service) at the awareness event held in the Chatham Township Municipal Building this week. Braham didn't need to prove her claims of domestic violence in every community. Before the event was over she had confirmation from two local Chatham women in the audience.

The women came to the meeting to thank JBWS, now in its 40th year, for the help they received and to tell their personal stories.

Chatham Township Mayor Curt Ritter organized the event to highlight Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Braham spoke about individual and community responses to domestic violence and the goal to "shift the social norms that allow it to continue while empowering victims and holding batterers responsible."

Anyone seeking help can go to the Jersey Battered Women's Service website for the hotline numbers and a wide variety of help program.
