You drive, you text, you pay. The Florham Park Police Department is participating in the 2017 Distracted Driving Crackdown.
From April 1st through April 21st, Florham Park drivers can expect to see additional patrols on the roads with an intense scrutiny on motor vehicle violations due to distracted driving. This three week crackdown is sponsored by the Division of Highway Traffic Safety and will aggressively enforce these violations over the course of the campaign.
Driver inattention is one of the worst offenders when it comes to fatal or incapacitating vehicle crashes in New Jersey. This isn’t just texting either. Any and all distractions endanger the life of you, your passengers and those who share the roads with you. Texting, cell phone or smart phone usage, eating, drinking, talking to passengers, grooming, reading, operating navigational systems, watching a video, or just fiddling with the radio all divert a driver’s attention away from the road where it belongs.
Cell phones are seen as the worst offenders, as making calls or sending messages from your phone diverts visual, manual and cognitive attention from the primary task of driving.
The Florham Park Police Department is urging drivers to, “put down the phone while driving and try to eliminate all distractions while driving. It could actually save your life and the life of another driver.”
