FLORHAM PARK, N.J.-Last monthe the Florham Park Police Department graduated 25 middle school students from its first Junior Police Academy Class. The 25 cadets attended a rigorous 1-week program that included daily physical training & military drill in addition to presentations and activities to help them explore and understand the field of law enforcement.

Some of these activities included learning about criminal investigations conducted bydetectives, mock motor vehicle stops, demonstration by the Morris County Sheriff’s K9 &Bomb Squad Units, an in-depth tour of Florham Park Police Headquarters, a trip to the MorrisCounty Public Safety Complex which included a tour of the Morris County Sheriff’s CrimeLab, Communication Center, Emergency Operations Center, Police Academy and a demonstration by the Morris County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team.

Cadets also participated in daily team building exercises that helped the 25 individual cadetscome together as 1 cohesive team by the end of the week. “The level of enthusiasm the cadets brought each day was beyond my expectations” stated Chief Joseph J. Orlando whotasked his Community Policing Bureau with planning and executing the academy.
