SUMMIT, NJ - Kyle Kirst, in his life and coaching career, touched countless lives -- leaving an unforgettably positive impression on all whom he met, mentored and entertained with his boundless enthusiasm, infectious energy and omnipresent positivity,
Known in the Hilltop City primarily for his long-standing service as Assistant Coach of the Summit High School Lacrosse Team, Kirst was connected to many different communities and several different sports.
Two of those links in particular -- Hanover Park and basketball -- are part of the inspiration for a unique, four-team basketball event which will be held at Summit High School the evening of January 21, starting at 5 p.m. The Hilltopper Girls Varsity will join its counterparts from Hanover Park, Ridge, and Bernards for two games of hoops in celebration of a unique man who lived life to its fullest. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kirst Children Education Foundation. Members of the Kirst family are expected to be in attendance.
According to Summit Girls Varsity Head Coach Tom Kenny, "Doug Wear (Hanover Park Girls Head Coach) is one of my best friends and he, Kyle -- who was Doug's longtime assistant -- and I coached against each other for the better part of 20 years. So, Doug and I wanted to do something that celebrated his life and career in girls' basketball, keying in on the four towns to which he gave much time and love."
In addition, and on top of the many coaching positions he held at Hanover Park over the course of two decades, Kirst was was Wear's freshman girls' coach.
The game schedule is as follows:
Bernards v. Hanover Park - 5 p.m.
Summit v. Ridge - 7 p.m.
