EAST HANOVER, NJ- Both squads lost heartbreaking extra-inning contests in North Jersey Gr. 2 Sec. 2 games played the last two days. The baseball team lost to third seed Rutherford 6-5 in 11 innings on Tuesday, May 30th in away from home, while the top seeded H.P. ladies fell to Hackettstown on Wednesday, May 31st 5-2 in 10 innings.
Hanover Park’s game against Rutherford was a semi-finals contest that was scoreless after three innings. Rutherford built a 5-1 lead after the fifth inning, but Hanover Park 19-7 led by seniors, Donato Casolaro who had 5 hits and Michael Christadore, who chipped in two hits, tied the score at 5-5 rallying with three runs in the top of the seventh on a key hit from Derek Saul, who had three RBIs . Senior southpaw, Joey Jandoli, pitched six scoreless innings, but the Hornets’ offense could not get the go ahead run. Rutherford finally scored in the 11th inning to secure the victory and end Hanover Park's season.
Hackettstown's starting quickly, scoring a run each in the first and second innings and held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Hanover Park 23-4 loaded the bases with two outs and senior Maddie McLaughlin’s grounder was mishandled and two runners scored to tie the game 2-2. Hanover Park had a chance to win in the eighth, but left two runners stranded. With the start of the 10th inning, the international tie-breaker was in effect and Hackettstown scored three times to take a 5-2 lead which they held onto and won the finals of the North Jersey Gr. 2 Sec. 2 and advanced in Group 2 State Tournament.
