Hanover Park Winter Sports Soldier On with Basketball, Swimming and Wrestling Wins

EAST HANOVER NJ- Hanover Park winter sports teams continued their winning ways as the boys basketball team secured wins over Madison 69-59 and Dover 78-54. The girls also were victorious beating Madison 37-28 and Dover 74-26.

The Hornets boys swimming team won their first meet of the season with a 93-71 victory over Parsippany, while the girls scored a convincing 133-34 win also over Parsippany. Hanover Park wrestlers took on Madison Wednesday Jan 18th and defeated the Dodgers 63-12. The only loss for the week was by one point to long time powerhouse Phillipsburg 34-33. The Stateliners are currently ranked third in New Jersey and the match was held on Phillipsburg's home mat.

Hanover Park’s boys team extended its winning streak to five games as the trio of Matt Winschuh, Joey Jandoli and Michael Boeckel continued to lead a high scoring Hornets team that averages 67 points a game in their 10-4 season record. Hanover Park broke open a close game against Madison when they outscored the Dodgers 18-10 in the fourth quarter to win 69-59. Winschuh led the scoring with 18 points including four three-pointers, Jandoli had 17 points with 11 rebounds and Boeckel chipped in 17 points and five assists.

The game against Dover was close at the half as the Hornets lead 39-31, but in the second half the Hornets again scored 39 points to maintain the lead. Their defense put in a strong shift, limiting the Tigers to only 23 points on the way to a 78-54 win. Winschu, Jandoli and Boeckel again were the leading scorers, but were joined by Eddie Feeney who hit four three-pointers. The teams 5-1 conference record currently has them tied for first place.

Hanover Park's girls team also has a winning streak going which stands at seven games. The Lady Hornets approach is a little different from the boys as they count on a reesolute defense that limits other teams to an average of 29 points a game. Led by Senior's Ava Gammo and Alexa Petrozzino, the Hornet's smoothing defence, along with the strong rebounding by sophomore Megan Macaluso, has jumped out to an 11-1 start.  

Hanover Park gained a quick 17-5 lead after the first quarter against Madison and their defense shutdown down the Dodgers to a 37-28 win. Gammo scored a game high 12 points all on three-pointers and Macaluso  pulled down 10 boards.

The outcome against Dover was never in doubt as the Hornets built a 48-15 advantage at halftime in route to a 74-26 win. Alexa Bursese scored 16 points and had five steals while Ava Gammo chipped in 14 points as 12 of the 13 players on the team broke into the scoring column. With their 7-0 conference record the Hornets stand alone in first place.

Hanover Park wrestler’s dual record stand at 9-2 after a victory over Madison 63-12 and the 34-33 loss to Phillipsburg. The Hornet's earned seven pins when it defeated the Dodgers, highlighted by Lou Raimo, Marco Zecca and Sean Conley. Hanover Park ranked 12th in New Jersey battled the Phillipsburg team as Nick and Lou Raimo secured wins at 126lbs and 132lbs by earning 12 points. The Stateliners were able to secure the victory by winning 4 of the 5 matches in the weight class from170lbs to 285lbs, but the Hornets did get 6 points from Senior Rory Deluca at 195lbs.

Hanover Park’s boys swimming team earned its first win of the season when it defeated Parsippany 93-71. The Hornets were led by Jon Kao who won the 200m and 500m freestyle races. Gary Sun came in first in the 200IM and the 100 breaststroke races. The third member of the boys team to win two events was Alex Trinh in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke. All three were also part of the winning 200 freestyle relay and 200 Medley relay.

The girls swimming team completed the sweep of Parsippany as they earned their third victory of the season 133-34. Hanover Park swimmers won 10 of the 11 events and were led by Rachel Keselman who was part of five of the winning events. Megan Healey had wins in the 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle races. Kelly Pierson also won two events the 100m butterfly and the 500m freestyle races.
