After last week’s dreary weekend, we are all looking forward to the nicer weather this coming Saturday and Sunday. Avoid the crowds at the shore and instead opt to attend one of the following family-friendly activities in the North Jersey area. Most of the events are free or inexpensive—ideal for those trying to save money after a jam-packed summer.
Celebrate the Morris Canal with a day of fun and music. On August 19 from 10 am to 5 pm, the festival will take over Hugh Force Canal Park in Wharton. The event features two musical stages as well as classic festival activities such as pony rides and face painting. Don’t miss out on the blacksmith demonstrations or the free narrated boat rides.
The New Jersey Botanical Garden in Ringwood is offering a free guided hiking experience on Sunday at 1 pm. The hike is easy and appropriate for all ages. Tour guides will discuss the magnificent plant and animal life found on the grounds. The event is free with guests meeting at the garden’s Carriage House Visitor Center.
The 10th Annual Rotary Fair is coming back to Hillsborough this weekend. On Friday and Saturday, the fair will operate between the hours of 6 pm to 10 pm and from 2 pm to 7 pm on Sunday. Fireworks are scheduled to go off at dusk on Friday. Saturday will be a wristband night where you pay one low price and go on unlimited rides. Skip dinner since you’ll want to save your appetite for all the delicious food and treats available at the carnival.
Edison’s Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their annual food truck festival this Saturday from 12 pm to 7 pm at Papaianni Park. Entrance fee is only $5 with children under 10 free of charge. Besides a large number of food vendors such as the Empanada Guy and Cypress Brewery, there will be craft vendors, games and children’s activities. A DJ will be spinning records as you eat your fill and sip your craft beer.
