Mary Comito State-Farm’s Athlete of the Week: Senior Catcher Nikkiann Giaimo
EAST HANOVER, NJ- Head Coach Jamie Galioto was confident in the backstop position with senior Nikkiann Giaimo behind the plate. Nikkiann, a four year varsity player, helped manage a pitching staff and anchor the defense that only allowed 44 runs in 27 games. “Being the catcher,” Nikkiann said "is both physically and mentally demanding and that it was a pleasure to play with such talented teammates." She has been playing softball since a very young age, with her Dad encouraging her to play.
Nikkiann will be attending Caldwell College in the fall and is looking forward to a career in nursing. The five seniors on the team have known each other for eight years and that was a key factor in the team’s success. She had a big game in the semi-finals of the NJSIAA Tournament Sec. 2 Gr 2 game against Caldwell, when she had two hits and drove in four runs. The team finished with a 23-4 record and tied for the conference championship with Parsippany with an 11-1 record. Nikkiann felt that some of the best games were against Parsippany over her four year career. She always sat in the same seat before a game.
