This summer, New Jersey Youth Theatre (NJYT) is presenting an original musical, Midnight Madness, a re-imagining of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, transporting Shakespeare’s work to a contemporary urban landscape.  Performances will run from July 20- August 6 at the Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts at 60 Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights, NJ.

Midnight Madness is a rollicking romp set in present-day Manhattan with politics in play. Based on A Midsummer Night's Dream, the incumbent Republican Mayor of Manhattan, about to marry his Democratic opponent, finds himself in a fantastical conflict of events, involving two pairs of lost lovers, a troupe of amateur actors from Queens and a power outage in Manhattan, all mischievously manipulated by none other than Puck and the Fairies of Central Park. The result: a hilarious storyline of mistaken identities, comic confusion and sheer charm set to a glorious, original score.

This is a family show that is appropriate for all ages. All children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. With a lush and catchy score by Jack Bender and charming and inventive lyrics and book by Cynthia Meryl, the result is a silly, madcap, jovial romp whose audiences will leave the theatre in great cheer.
