It's finally summer and some of us can't wait until the first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 11th to see how our New York Jets are starting off this year. A couple of new stories have happened in the past two weeks since mini camp ended so I'll give a run-down on the news while I wait to hear who our starting quarterback will be this year (yes, I'm still waiting ).
On June 23rd, the New York Jets announced that they have partnered with Porsche Cars North America Inc. Porsche is the official sports car and luxury vehicle for the Jets for the next couple of years. I just got back from Germany last month and there were quite a few fast, fast, and even faster Porsches on the Autobahn. I'm currently driving a BMW sports car but would love to own a 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. The BMW is too small to take to the game, since I have four season tickets, and I can't fit the grill in the trunk along with chairs, food, people etc. The 911 would have the same dilemma for me but I would love to take that baby out for a test drive. I definitely do not want to drive an automatic transmission on my dream test drive.
My personal choice of test drives would have to be on Highway 50 in the State of Nevada. "The Loneliest Road in America" stretches from Lake Tahoe and crosses several large desert valleys, alpine forests, a few ghost towns and ends on the east side of the State of Nevada before continuing east all the way to Maryland. I just want to drive the Nevada section. I've driven it before as a passenger in a Ferrari and it is desolate. But Highway 50 is made for speed and excitement. Highway 50 crosses 17 mountain passes, steep grades, hairpin turns and there's no better place to drive a fast car unless you're on the Autobahn. I know we are the New York Jets but I would love to cruise in a green and white "New York Jets" Porsche on this amazing highway along with a photographer to video the ride. It's on my wish list. Hey out there, I 'll be in Nevada the end of July - just saying.
In other news, it has been reported on the New York Jets official site and by some sports outlets that Brandon Marshall is on a diet. Yes, our favorite Jets players are just like us; every once in a while they need to lose weight. Head Coach Todd Bowles wants Marshall to get his weight down to where he was when he played for Miami.
It's summer and some of us have missed getting our bodies in beach shape so now we can diet along with one of our favorite New York Jets players, Brandon Marshall. I hope the weight loss deadline is September 11th, the date of our opening date against the Cincinnati Bengals, because I could use to lose a few pounds and my goal needs two months to reach it. After all, the 4th of July is coming and I'm sure hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad and beer aren't on the "Todd Bowles Diet". Brandon, if they are, please let me know !! and I will diet accordingly.
In another piece of news, the New York Jets have announced the 2016 Training Camp schedule, which will afford fans the opportunities to watch practice, including nine practices that are specifically designed to host large crowds. What's really nice for all of us in East Hanover and Florham Park is all practices will be at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center and admission and parking are free. Tickets will be required though, and beginning July 14th, fans can register and print their tickets for the Open Practices and they will be able to find more information on parking. One important note, season ticket holders will receive the special opportunity to register for Open Practice before the general public starting July 12th so don't forget to get online and order on that date. Remember to check for all security and carry-in procedures so your ability to enter the practices isn't interrupted.
Fans will have shuttle service to and from a special parking lot, there will be bleachers for viewing the practices, water stations close to the field and cooling stations as well. There will be an expanded food court (I hope they will have some items available from the Todd Bowles diet) and a fan zone with family- friendly activities that many of you are familiar with after having attended New York Jets activities. Happy children become happy New York Jets fans in the future. The Jets Shop tent will also feature new merchandise for the 2016 season and season ticket holders will receive a 15% discount when purchasing at the Jets Shop. I've got a few items I need this year so I will be participating in spending and saving.
There will be special Youth Group Days so if you are interested, please check newyorkjets.com/camp.
Season ticket holders will have access to reserved seating and Jets Reward members will earn special points at each open practice. Yeah, I love this.
On August 14th, the New York Jets will host more that 40 former players who will be available for autographs throughout the day in the Jets Fest tent but look for them to be in other areas as well.
My final news is sad news. The New York Jets announced that former assistant coach Buddy Ryan has died at the age of 82. I don't have enough space in this article to really cover just how valuable he was to the New York Jets and football history so I will do an extra write-up this week just to cover his story. I love Jets history.
