EAST HANOVER, NJ - A clean and beautiful community says a lot about a town. And in the early morning of October 19th, a special initiative was conducted at Central Elementary School in East Hanover.
This was known as the One Day One School program, a nationally recognized initiative that brings all departments in a town together at one educational location to clean up and beautify the area.
For that entire morning, tree experts, school officials, town representatives, local companies and young students gave their time at Central Elementary to promote a safer and cleaner school ground. In total, over 300 volunteers gathered to provide school beautification that wouldn’t be in the school’s budget.
“This town is the epitome of love,” said Natalee Bartlett, superintendent of East Hanover Schools. “Thank you to everyone who came to beautify our schools. In the motto of our hashtag, #WeAreEH. We are a family.”
One Day One School has been held in the district for 12 years and is run by township committeeman Thomas “Ace” Gallagher, who works alongside planning teams from East Hanover and Hanover Township, thus maximizing resources across multiple municipalities to support these beautification efforts. These planning teams may include mayors, chiefs of police, school administration, PTA members, local individuals and businesses. Organizations, such as Rotarians and The Knights of Columbus, are also part of the teams.
“The entire initiative is based on encouraging students to come out to participate and take ownership of their schools,” said Committeeman Gallagher. “It provides a way to give back to the community to provide our students and our community a school that is safe, beautiful and a place we can be proud of.”
When the afternoon had arrived, the school grounds of Central Elementary saw five new trees and over 60 flowers.
Lunch was provided by The Godfather Brick Oven Pizzeria and the Knights of Columbus. Coffee and donuts were served by volunteers from the teacher union and donated by Dunkin Donuts and Sorrento Bakery.
