MADISON, NJ – The supposed victim of a July 23 armed robbery in downtown Madison is now accused of fabricating his story, said Madison Police Chief Darren Dachisen in a statement on Thursday.

Eugenio Munoz Castillo, 50, of Madison told police he was ordered to get on the ground by two tall men wearing dark clothes and masks while entering a covered driveway near the British Home Emporium, according to police. He claimed one or both of the robbers was carrying what appeared to be a gun, police said.

During the investigation, detectives obtained video footage from the Nautilus Diner and other area businesses and determined the robbery did not occur, police said. Castillo was arrested and charged with filing a false police report.

While Castillo was being processed at Madison Police Headquarters, police determined that he is a fugitive wanted in Costa Rica on child rape charges.

Castillo is now being held at the Morris County Correctional Facility in lieu of his first court appearance. Madison police said they do not currently have a motive.

“The incident put responding officers from Madison, surrounding towns and our citizens in jeopardy while causing public alarm,” Dachisen said.
