CHATHAM, NJ - There has been an added police presence at Chatham Middle School this week as a result of unspecified messages received by telephone and email, according to Chatham Superintendent Dr. Michael LaSusa.

"In recent days, the school district has received a number of telephonic and email messages that prompted engagement with the Chatham Borough and Chatham Township police departments," LaSusa said.  "Both departments have been terrific in working with us, as they always are, and have provided some additional police presence in the district.  We will continue to work with the police as we deem appropriate moving forward."

LaSusa declined to detail any of the messages received and debunked rumors that the CMS website had been forced to shut down.

"I am not aware of the CMS website being shut down," LaSusa said. "I have not had any problem accessing it at any point recently.

"We do not believe there is any danger to our students, and we have been working with our police departments out of an abundance of caution to ensure that all district operations run as normal. We welcomed students back to school from their vacation last week as we always do and it has been a typical week of learning and activity."

Chatham received national attention on Feb. 20 when two Chatham Middle School parents appeared on Fox News Channel's "Tucker Carlson Tonight" to voice their opinion about an emphasis on the religion of Islam in a 7th grade social studies class.
