Three Alarm Fire in Downtown Madison Displaces Residents and Two Main Street Businesses

MADISON, NJ - A third floor fire in a residential apartment at 49 Main Street in downtown Madison quickly escalated to the three alarm fire a little after 5p.m. Sunday Feb. 19 said officials. 

The building which is now uninhabitable until structural repairs can be made houses two floors of residential apartments and two commercial first floor businesses, including the Bagel Chateau. 

The Madison Volunteer Ambulance Squad responded along with the Madison Police who shut down Main Street while mutual aid from Florham Park, Chatham, Morris Township and Cedar Knolls, Morristown, New Vernon, Morris Plains, Chatham Township, Whippany, Green Village, East Hanover and Summit Fire Departments.

"Morris County responded with their Mobile Ambulance Bus as did the Morris County Fire Coordinator. In all, approximately 75 Firefighters responded to the fire," said Borough officials 

"The fire was under control in about 70 minutes. Fire crews remained on scene performing overhaul and investigating for the cause and origin of the fire until 11:29 pm. Madison Fire, Police and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office are currently investigating the cause of the fire. The Madison Electric & Water Departments responded to the scene as did PSE&G," they added.

The fire could be seen from Rte 24. There were no injuries. 

"The Red Cross was notified to help assist with temporary housing needs of the residents," officials said.
