CEDAR GROVE, NJ - Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. And every 13 minutes, a woman will lose her battle with the disease. These are mothers, sisters, wives, and friends.

Susan G. Komen was one of them. After the Texas native passed away from breast cancer, her sister founded the Susan G. Komen Foundation and it blossomed into a national force for advocacy, assistance, and change.

On March 16, Susan G. Komen North Jersey held its annual Pink Tie Party at The Grove in Cedar Grove sponsored by Dun & Bradstreet and TAPinto (Funding the Cures); Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey; NJM Insurance Group; Pfizer; and RWJBarnabas Health (Partners in the Promise).

TIn addition to corporate honoree Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ and medical honoree Pfizer, Jennie Silecchia, a 15- year volunteer for the organization, was saluted. Her family came across the country to support her from California and Florida.

“My husband’s cousin passed at a young age from breast cancer," she said. "When I volunteer, I have the pleasure to be a part of making them happy and helping them. I get to take care of them through a wonderful organization.”

The gala's live auction raised over $32,000.

“It’s about the beautiful survivors, celebrating them and their fortitude and strength that they show that help us move forward every single day,” said Executive Director of Susan G. Komen North Jersey Kelly E. Nagle.

Susan G. Komen North Jersey's many supporters who attended the lavish event made various monetary pledges to the charity. A donation of $10,000 can provide 58 screening mammograms. A donation of $5,000 can provide 125 hours of patient navigation.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation works to:

  • Help uninsured and underinsured women and men who are in need of services today
  • Invest in research to prevent others from getting the disease tomorrow
  • Find new, innovative treatment options to enhance the quality of life for patients and   ultimately find the causes and the cures to eradicate breast cancer forever

Since 1982 Susan G. Komen has invested almost $3 billion in the fight against breast cancer, becoming the largest non-governmental source of funds in the world.  Every major breast cancer breakthrough has been funded in part through Komen research dollars.
