STAFFORD AND LONG BEACH ISLAND - Tropical Storm Jose is excpected to have an impact on the Stafford-LBI area.  Jose formed halfway between Africa and the Caribbean the day after Labor Day. The storm has been hanging around the mid-Atlantic, weakened, and then strengthened again. Now two weeks later, Jose will have an impact on the local area.

The storm as of 8 a.m. Monday is a category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is located 450 miles south-southeast of Cape May.

Today (Monday) will be fairly quiet, the clouds will thicken and it will be a humid day.  Stray showers are expected and it is raining early this morning in Stafford and LBI. You can expect a strong breezy wind to begin late this afternoon (Monday).

The area will experience a rain band Monday evening with potential of heavier rain Tuesday morning.  Rain and wind will be strong on Tuesday and will lessen overnight into Wednesday morning according to forecasters.

The surf is extremely rough and we have had high risk of rip currents.  Tuesday evening’s high tide is expected to be the largest possibility for coastal flooding.

Wave heights are in the 4 to 6 foot range.  They are expected to increase to as high as 10 feet during the main time of the storm.  Moderate to major beach erosion is expected.

As far as flooding, the storm surge estimate will be in the 1 to 3 foot range. There will be a New Moon Tuesday night which will raise the tide about 6 inches.  These forces will result in moderate storm surge.

Sustained winds will range from 15 to 30 mph, with gusts over 50 mph possible.

There is the potential of 1-3 inches of rain possible during the storm.

Forecasters are predicting that with the storm off shore,  the rough surf and brisk wind may continue for several days past Tuesday.

TAPinto Stafford-LBI will keep our readers updated on this storm.
