Meet the Author: Laura Sims, "Looker"

A tightly-wound psychological thriller and a catalogue of voyeuristic pleasures, Laura Sims’s LOOKER published by Scribner is a debut novel that dissects our image-worshipping culture even as it hurtles to an eruptive, Hitchcockian climax.

With sparkling literary language and an arsenal of deadly thrills, LOOKER combines the bravura voice of Ottessa Moshfegh and the psychological fascinations of Paula Hawkins into an enormously entertaining tale for our media saturated era.

Laura edited and introduced Fare Forward: Letters from David Markson (powerHouse, 2014), a collection of letters spanning her seven-year correspondence and friendship with the celebrated experimental novelist. She has written book reviews and essays for a number of journals, including Boston Review, New England Review, The Review of Contemporary Fiction, Poetry Foundation, Jacket, and Rain Taxi, and has been a Featured Writer for the Poetry Foundation’s Harriet blog.

Laura has also written four books of poetry, including Staying Alive (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2016), My god is this a man (Fence Books, 2014), Stranger (Fence Books, 2009), and Practice, Restraint (Fence Books Ottoline Prize, 2005).

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Sims attended the College of William and Mary as an undergraduate; she later received her MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) at University of Washington in Seattle. Sims was awarded a 2006 US-Japan Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship, and since 2003 she has taught creative writing and English at Baruch College, NYU-SPS, Poets House, and other institutions. Sims is Editor-at-Large forThe Scofield and a co-editor of Instance Press. She is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science at Queens College.

In her Library visit, Laura will speak about her debut novel "Looker", her experiences as a writer, read selections from her book, and take audience questions; copies of her book will be available for sale.
