EAST HANOVER, N.J.  –  The new weight room at Hanover Park High School was unveiled yesterday to the delight of students, athletes and coaches alike! It was the culmination of effort from the New York Jets, the United Way and NRG.  This is from the New York Jets recent news release:

New York Jets players helped unveil a remodeled, state-of-the-art weight room at Hanover Park High School as part of the 21st annual Hometown Huddle on October 8, a Jets day of service with United Way of Northern New Jersey. 

The $70,000 makeover, including new equipment, flooring and wall graphics, was made possible due to a collaboration involving United Way, the New York Jets and NRG. The project also served as the kickoff for the United Way Varsity Letter program at Hanover Park High School where students will receive a varsity letter for completing 120 hours of community service in conjunction with the Jets Huddle for 100 initiative.

As part of the celebration of the NFL’s 100th season, Huddle for 100 looks to inspire 1 million people to volunteer 100 minutes of their time to make meaningful contributions to their communities — with the goal being 100 million minutes volunteered by Super Bowl LIV.

Nearly 50 Hanover Park students have already stepped up to meet the challenge by committing to the United Way Varsity Letter program. On Friday, October 4, the Jets randomly selected ninth-grader Colleen Sannito and surprised her with a trip for two to Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Florida if she meets the volunteering benchmarks in the Varsity Letter program by December 1, 2019.

The Varsity Letter and Huddle for 100 challenge is also taking place at Whippany Park High School. The Jets will also award a student there a trip for two to the Super Bowl.

“We thank our partners – the Jets, NRG and Hanover Park – for putting this spotlight on the importance of giving back to your community,” said United Way Senior Vice President for Resource Development Theresa Leamy. “We believe our Varsity Letter students will set a standard that can be modeled by students across northern New Jersey.”

Students logged some volunteer time during Hometown Huddle, helping Jets players put the finishing touches on the weight room. The players also provided demonstrations on how to use the new equipment. 

“The New York Jets are proud to partner with the United Way of Northern New Jersey and NRG to bring a Play60 fitness opportunity to Hanover Park High School,” said Jets Community Relations Senior Director Jesse Linder. “In celebration of NFL 100, we wanted to show our commitment to our local community and give back to those closest to us.”.”

“The Hanover Park Regional High School District is honored to be working with the New York Jets, United Way of Northern New Jersey and NRG to host this community-wide event,” said Hanover Park Regional High School District Superintendent Maria Carrell. “We look forward to strengthening our partnerships with these organizations for the continued development of our students and schools.”

Since 1999, the Jets have partnered with United Way on Hometown Huddle — a day of service designed to bring awareness to the issue of youth health and fitness. The NFL and the Jets are committed to promoting youth health and fitness through the NFL’s PLAY 60 program. Throughout the year, players and representatives from the New York Jets make appearances at schools and community events to encourage kids to be active for 60 minutes a day to reverse the trend of childhood obesity.
