EAST HANOVER, N.J.- The undefeated Hanover Park 14u travel softball team earned the top seed heading into the USABL 14U playoffs at the Elmora Youth Complex in Elizabeth. As the Hornets have done all season, they won their semi- final game, defeating their opponent 13-3. Later that afternoon they played for the USABL 14U league championship vs the Elmora Huskies in a game that was anything but routine. The game featured the top two seeds competing for the league championship. Hanover Park held a 6-3 lead after six innings thanks to pitcher Olivia Klein, three hits from shortstop Peyton Sward and a key three-run single by catcher Molly Cocco. The Hornets lead was not safe as the Huskies struck back in the top of the seventh with a three-run HR to tie the game. Hanover Park then called on pitcher Alyza Dooley to pitch two innings in relief. Dooley’s solid pitching along with outstanding defensive plays by center fielder Alyssa Alfano and second baseman Jenna Vitale helped keep the game close. The Huskies did however manage to score one run in the top of the eighth inning .  In the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs the Hornets found themselves down to their last strike. With a runner on third, catcher Molly Cocco managed a walk.  Ally Huang ran for Cocco and immediately stole second. With runners on 2nd and 3rd outfielder Natalie Weinstock delivered the game winning hit on a line drive to right field scoring two runs to win the game for the Hornets in dramatic fashion 8 to 7.
Most of the Hornets have played together since the fourth grade. This marks the second time the Hornets have won a league championship.  The team is coached by Steve Alfano, Brian Dooley and Doug Sward.
