EAST ORANGE/ORANGE, NJ — As the numbers continue to come in throughout Essex County during the second, and now a third wave of COVID-19, Orange and East Orange are being impacted.

This past week, positive cases of COVID-19 drastically decreased since the previous week's numbers. From April 5 – April 11, there was a combined total of 278 new cases (185 in East Orange and 93 in Orange). This is about 100 fewer cases than last week. This decrease breaks a trend of increases that we steadily saw for over a month.

The third wave of COVID-19 is here. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, stay home as much as possible, stand six feet apart, limit indoor and outdoor gatherings, and wear a mask to keep the numbers in our two towns from increasing.

The vaccination process began last year. The State administered their first round of vaccines here in Essex County at University Hospital in Newark. The County administered their first after the state at Essex County College, also in Newark.  The vaccine is not available to all the public yet. Healthcare workers, their support staff, first responders, seniors, those with or existing conditions, and funeral/mortuary workers and now teachers are first in line. "As of March 29, vaccine eligibility has expanded to new groups of essential workers. On April 5, it expanded to include additional essential workers, individuals age 55+, and individuals age 16+ with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has been paused due to women developing rare blood clotting disorders. It has been stated that the Pfizer vaccine will need a booster shot in the future. Essex County is asking pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to sign waivers before getting vaccinated.  The debate of to vax or not to vax continues.

It has been reported that unvaccinated people are at a greater chance of death during the third wave.

•    The number of infected individuals in any municipality is likely to be much greater than indicated as this data ONLY includes persons who have been tested and whose lab results have been reported in the State’s data system.
•    This data will not match any other report since cases are continually entering the system and local health departments may reassign place of residence as appropriate during their investigations.
