EAST ORANGE, NJ - One of the town’s much anticipated events is the Annual Christmas Party and Toy Giveaway at Calvary Roseville Church in East Orange sponsored Mark and Joi Smith of Joi’s Angels. Eash year literally thousands of local families are blessed with gifts and toys because of the work of this diligent and thoughtful group.
This year, TAPinto East Orange/Orange was invited to tour the operation and was given an exclusive interview with the organization’s co-founder and namesake, Joi Smith.
During the interview Joi remarked, “At Joi’s Angels we try to always give something back to the community; so we started about three years ago having an annual Christmas party for the community where we give out toys, coats, pampers, home necessities, bikes, computers and anything we feel is needed in the community.”
When asked if the agency received any assistance from other partners she emphatically responded, “Absolutely, you know one person can never do it all, no agency can do it all. We have the support of many, we have so many companies; I wish I could name them all. It’s a collaboration of some fantastic organizations, other nonprofits, and other organizations and schools. It was like everyone coming together to make this event is a success.”
In response to what appeared to be the overwhelming crowd of patrons, Joi announces, “We have over a thousand toys. Besides that we have laptops, desktops, bikes, flat screens; those are some of the grand prizes for participation in some of our talents shows and raffles which are all free. We have about six or seven hundred coats, enough pampers for about 2000 people- and dinner, and music and dancing.”
