EAST ORANGE, NJ - Newark Public Safety Spokesman Captain Derek Glenn reported that two individuals were shot shortly after 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning while outside of the Tremont Lounge located at the intersection of Tremont Avenue and Halsey Street.  The two victims, a male and a female where both transported to UMDNJ to be treated for non-life threatening gunshot wounds. Further investigation revealed that the male victim was a retired Hudson County law enforcement officer, authorities say.

Command rank officers from the East Orange Police Department and the Newark Police Division were both present at the scene where the commanders determined that jurisdictionally, the East Orange Police would investigate the shooting. Our goal to to reduce crime and when it happens to make every effort to quickly remove the suspects from the streets and to aide in the successful prosecution.

We don't have time to dispute about jurisdictional issues and the impact they may have on crime statistics.  Detectives from the Newark Police Division’s Shooting Response Team are determining the facts to ensure that the victims are provided a complete and meaningful investigation by the responsible agency.

The Newark Police Division’s Alcohol Beverage Control Unit is temporarily closing the Tremont Lounge in response to the recent violence in the immediate area of the establishment.
