Authorities Investigate Recent Homicide of East Orange Man (20) and Newark Man (30) in Newark

NEWARK, NJ - Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray  and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating two unrelated homicides in Newark that occurred on Friday (5/13/16) afternoon. The first incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. Newark police officers were dispatched to the area of 76 Cutler Street on reports of shots fired. Arriving officers observed a male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was rushed to University Hospital, where he  was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m. The victim has been identified as Joshua Smith, age 20, of East Orange.

The second incident occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. Newark police officers responded to a medical aid call at a residence in the 100 block of Hobson Street. Arriving units discovered an unresponsive male at this location. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. This individual has been identified as Jerome Myers, age 30, of Newark. It appears that Myers died as a result of an altercation with another individual, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit, who added that the exact cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

Both incidents are being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department. No arrests have been made at this time and both investigations are active and ongoing, according to Fennelly.
