EAST ORANGE, NJ - East Orange resident and former Freeholder President, Britnee Timberlake was sworn in Monday to fill the seat vacated by Sheila Oliver, another East Orange resident, who became the first black woman to assume statewide office in Garden State history when she became Lieutenant Governor earlier this month.

During the Ceremony, Craig Coughlin, New Jersey General Assembly Speaker spoke in glowing terms of the many accomplishments made by Timberlake as an elected official and private citizen.

During her tenure as Freeholder Timberlake spearheaded several initiatives that aimed to make vast improvements to the quality of life of Essex County residents. For example, in 2015 she drafted a law requiring banks the county holds taxpayer deposits with to come before the Board to show proof of their efforts to reduce foreclosures, provide loans to entrepreneurs, assist low-to-moderate-income communities, and maintain vacant homes they own.

Aside from being an elected official, Timberlake is the founding Executive Director of a non-profit affordable housing organization  called the Essex Community Land Trust (ECLT). The ECLT strengthens communities by providing permanent affordable housing and financial empowerment opportunities for working families and individuals throughout Essex County.

Timberlake will represent the 34th legislative district which includes East Orange, Orange, South Orange and parts of Newark in the  Assembly.  She now faces a special election in November for the remainder of Oliver's two-year term.
