EAST ORANGE – Bryant Cowart has won the “Clean Communities Program Award” from the New Jersey Clean Communities Council (NJCCC) for maintaining a comprehensive cleanup, enforcement and education program in the City of East Orange.

Cowart oversees the city’s Clean Communities program, which focuses heavily on educating   young children. He works alongside educator David Street of East Orange, who performs anti-litter classroom presentations to students on the importance of recycling and picking up garbage.

In addition, Cowart runs the NJCCC student exchange, in which 12 East Orange students collaborate with other schools to brainstorm solutions for recycling, littering and water problems.

Cowart hopes to grow the Clean Communities program by increasing in-school recycling for the upcoming school year. “Thirteen schools in the area recycle out of twenty-five. My goal is to bump this number up by no later than October,” said Cowart.

He also organizes three city-wide paper shredding days and two city-wide cleanups in which schools, churches and community groups come together to clean up neighborhoods in East Orange. This year, Cowart was involved more volunteers in cleanups than in the previous 13 years combined.

“People are taking to keeping their neighborhoods clean,” said Cowart. “We are working with kids to participate in cleanups, along with senior citizens who want to keep their neighborhoods clean.”

Cowart works closely with other NJCCC award winners in his area to beautiful East Orange. He has supported organizations that want to help with beautification efforts, such as Pink Dragon Artist Syndicate, LLC, winner of the NJCCC’s “NJ Transit Adopt-a-Station Award.”

“Bryant Cowart has worked diligently to strengthen every component of the East Orange Clean Communities program,” said NJCCC Executive Director Sandy Huber. “We thank him for all of his hard work, and look forward to seeing the steady growth of the program for years to come.”

NJCCC is a comprehensive, statewide litter-abatement program that has served New Jersey residents and visitors for more than 25 years. Learn more at
