THE CHALLENGE

Sometimes, a taste of history is the best method to rekindle conversations on a particular subject.

The Challenge is a summary of my career spent as a coach and trainer of track and field athletes within the City of East Orange. The emphasis of this synopsis is based on The Challenge  that I was given to develop high school athletes who would be skilled enough to compete successfully as hurdlers.

I cannot continue any further without acknowledging and providing the utmost respect to  Mr. Earl Rogers whom I consider to be the Godfather of Track & Field in East Orange.  He is the person who afforded me the  jump-start  in coaching with the East Orange Striders Track and Field Club. I pray that some time in the very near future, he will be honored by the people within the City of East Orange for his work and accomplishments in youth Track & Field!

I am dedicating this compilation to the following individuals: Mr. Jeff Walden, Clifford J. Scott High School Class of 1980 (CJ Scott HS),  Mr. John Gray, CJ Scott HS Class of 1980, Mr. Jason Harris, CJ Scott HS Class of 1983 and most of all,  Mr. Gary McGriff,  Former Head Track & Field Coach, Clifford J. Scott High School.

As I reflect on my high school coaching career (which began at Clifford J. Scott High School in the spring of 1980), my thoughts immediately drift back to The Challenge  Coach McGriff placed on me upon his resignation from coaching to pursue a career in business. It was 1982, my second  season as an assistant track & field coach at CJ Scott HS. Our boys team had been a dominate force within the State of New Jersey in 1979 and 1980. As I began my first season with the program in 1980, the boys won almost everything; including the most prestigious title; the State of New Jersey Track and Field Team Championship at the Illustrious Meet of Champions! The team scored an amazing 19 points which captured the championship. Both John Gray and Jeff Walden competed and placed in the finals of the 110 High Hurdles. John placing 3rd and Jeff 5th. Coach McGriff had not 1 but 2 boys finishing among the top 5 hurdlers in the entire State of New Jersey. What an accomplishment!

Two seasons later, I find myself being appointed the new Head Track and Field Coach to replace the departing Head Coach, Mr. Gary McGriff. Before he left the building on his last day, he looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Kirton, Scott has built a tradition of producing very good hurdlers! Don’t let that tradition die!” The Challenge

I felt somewhat prepared to take over the team due to the fact that I had also been coaching and training runners as part of the East Orange Striders Track & Field Club. Many of the CJ Scott HS Track and Field Team were also members of the Striders during the summer months. I was also a former sprinter and long jumper, but coaching and training hurdlers was absurd! I had no clue. I felt like someone was asking me to jump into deep water without knowing I could not swim! I was completely lost as I had no idea of the logistical aspects of training hurdlers.

However, contemplating The Challenge  given by Coach McGriff actually motivated me.  I stepped out of my comfort zone and confronted myself to learn the various aspects of the event; both the sprint and intermediate hurdles. I began reading everything I could get my hands on regarding coaching and training hurdlers. I also attended various track & field clinics that offered sessions on training techniques and strategies, as well as viewed countless instructional videos. The knowledge I acquired transformed my practice and training sessions. They became more intense and productive. By the 1983 outdoor season, the underclassmen had become seniors and they were executing and competing very well. With the assistance of one of my senior athletes (Jason Harris), our hurdlers were performing so well that we actually won our very first Shuttle Hurdle Relay Title at the Essex County Relay Championships. The time (1:00.9) set a new meet record which lasted 22 years. Our boys also won the team title at the Essex County Track & Field Championships giving us our very first title as a team.

In 1986, we actually began to create the true sense of a girls track and field program at Clifford Scott High School. By 1987, they started performing extremely well. One of my biggest goals as the hurdles coach and trainer was to have a New Jersey Meet of Champions in the sprint hurdles. I came very close to accomplishing that during the winter of 1987 when Karen James placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles in the Meet of Champions at Princeton University.  Then in 1989, Simone Scott placed 3rd in that same event at the Meet of Champions which was also held at Princeton University.

As time progressed, I was never able get to another boy to run as fast as John or Jeff in either the 55M or the 110M hurdles, nor has anyone run faster than Jason in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Unfortunately, after the two high schools (East Orange and CJ Scott) merged in 2002 to form East Orange Campus High School (EO Campus HS), my official contracted position was as an Assistant Girls Track and Field Coach and I had very limited access to working with the boys’ team.

In the fall of 2003, a very talented freshman named  Racquel Vassell  arrived  at EO Campus HS as a member of the graduating class of 2007.  In her junior year (2006), I almost pulled off having a sprint hurdler winning the State of New Jersey Meet of Champions as Racquel advanced to the Meet of Champions at Princeton University in the 55 meter hurdles and placed 2nd with a time of 8.22. Wow! So close. By the  time Racquel became a senior, I finally accomplished the goal of having a hurdler win the Meet of Champions in the sprint hurdles. Racquel actually achieved attaining the indoors and outdoors titles in 2007. During the outdoor season in 2007, she never lost a race in the 100 meter hurdles. I would have to say that besides Jason Harris’ 400 meter intermediate hurdles victory at the Meet of Champion in 1983, Raquel’s accomplishments in 2007 was my personal best highlight during my career as a hurdle coach.

Fast Forward, Wednesday, June 4, 2014.  Here I am attending my very last track and field  meet in an official coaching capacity which happened to be The State of New Jersey Meet of Champions at South Plainfield High School. Ironically, I was there to watch 3 of my athletes compete in the biggest and most prestigious meet of the season. What’s really cool about it was all three were competing in hurdle races. None of our other team members had qualified in any other event.

Senior Haji Davis and Junior Mykalah Curry qualified in the sprint hurdles, while Cory Poole (who was only a freshman) competed in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Davis and Poole were members of the EO Campus HS team. Curry was there representing Butler High School, but had attended many EO Campus HS hurdle practices, as well as some private one on one sessions I conducted with her. I was so elated that as a junior, she had won the Group I State Title by running 15.08 in the 100 meter hurdles  and  placed 4th in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:05.45.

On the other hand, Poole was capping off a sensational season. Out of the 35 boys competing in the 400 intermediate hurdles, he was the only freshman who had qualified. He crossed the finish line in a personal record time of 54.93. My thoughts immediately went back to my very first intermediate hurdler Jason Harris. It was another amazing feat.  I was wishing Jason could have been there to witness that race.   Corey placed 10th overall.

After watching the athletes compete in their respective events, I looked at a few more races but felt a little remorse. My coaching career was officially over and I didn’t stay much longer. Before I left, I had the opportunity to see and greet many of my colleagues and friends. As I was departing, I heard a familiar voice of someone who I had not seen in a long time calling me; “Hey Coach Kirton”. How ironic? It was Stacy Williams who was a member of that same 1980 State Championship team 34 years ago calling out to me;  priceless

When I finished talking with Stacy, I left the stadium.  I began to reminisce about Jeff, John, Stacy, Lamar, Steve, Derrick Roberts and many others from that 1980 team. Most of all, I thought about Coach McGriff and The Challenge. That’s actually when I first thought about documenting it.

To sum it all up, I would have to say my years spent coaching track and field has been extremely rewarding and fulfilling. It certainly had its high and low points. At times, it was also a means of therapy when I was facing some extremely challenging issues in my personal life. Being around the athletes always cheered me up. There are so many of them that I would like to thank for giving me the opportunity to coach them.

I have only outlined my career as a hurdle coach. As I look back, there were so many other successes in numerous events. I have had the gracious opportunity to coach and train various other individual event champions and won a few team titles too.

I am also including results, times and statistics of some of my former hurdlers and hurdle relay teams. It was quite difficult trying to recall and/or obtain so much of the past exact results. What I couldn’t remember, I had to connect with a few of my former hurdlers for assistance. Other past results were quite difficult to obtain. I am not certain if all the results are 100% accurate and there are some results I was not able to obtain. I listed as much as I could remember or acquire.

Again, it was all ignited by fulfilling The Challenge Coach McGriff placed on me. The success that followed has afforded me an invaluable career as a track & field coach. I hope Coach McGriff will be pleased!

There are a few people I would like to personally thank for helping me with my career and being there for me in times of great need professionally and personally. First of all, thank you Mr. Gary McGriff, Head Coach Clifford J. Scott High School 1980/81. You motivated me with The Challenge. To Jeff Walden, John Gray, and Jason Harris, thank you for displaying the type of heart and desire it takes to be a hurdler. I still remember the stories I heard about you guys taking hurdles home and racing each other in the streets of East Orange. Such craziness, yet dedication! I do recall having to go by Jason’s house to pick up the hurdles he left in his back yard.  His mother informed me that Jason had left them there after he departed to attend the University of Pittsburg.

I also want to thank a few more individuals; Mr. Ron McDonald for bringing me back to coach in East Orange after I had previously left to coach at Montclair State University. Additionally, my practically adopted son, Mr. Arthur James who has walked with me in track and field since he was 10 years old. I couldn’t have done virtually anything with the girls’ team at East Orange Campus High School without him. Mr. Lance Wigfall who has the ability, as well as embodies the passion and desire to continue the efforts of brining East Orange Track & Field back to its former glory. To Rolanda Bruce, my protégé. I know you will continue the legacy of East Orange hurdlers. Thank you for becoming a true student of your event and sport.

My fondest thanks goes to two very special people, Mr. Don Henderson who was really there for me at my time of personal crisis and showed me the way back to Christ. Mr. John Blanton who now always refers to me as “big brother”. You have been a true colleague and friend; professionally and personally. I learned so much more about track and field from you. We made quite a formidable team! Thank you for all your help and believing in me and my coaching abilities. God bless you and keep you and your family.

Last of all, yet first of all, I give God all the glory for allowing me to touch the lives of so many young people. If there was anything I did that was in some way negative or unworthy, please except my true apology.  I pray that my influence helped each of you in some positive way!

Humbly and Sincerely Submitted By:

Coach Richard “Papa” Kirton
