BLOOMFIELD, NJ - Bloomfield Police arrested an East Orange man after he attempted to deposit a stolen check in the Provident Bank on Bloomfield Avenue. The check was for $417,452.65.
Everett Lewis of East Orange deposited the stolen check into a business bank account he opened on January 25. Authorities were contacted on February 14 when Lewis returned to the Bloomfield Branch to withdraw money from the account. He was placed under arrest at that time.
Lewis is charged with crimes including 3rd degree Forgery, 2nd degree Theft, and 2nd degree Receiving Stolen Property, 2nd degree Money Laundering. In addition Mr. Lewis was charged with Possession of CDS after authorities discovered suspected marijuana in his possession.
Police Director Samuel DeMaio praised the alertness of the bank employees for making the immediate notification to the Police which led to the arrest of the suspect and the avoidance of the theft of the large amount of currency.
