East Orange Mayoral Candidate Ted Green Files Record Number of Petitions at Filing Deadline

EAST ORANGE, NJ - East Orange mayoral candidate Ted R. Green, and The Green Team candidates for City Council today filed a record number of petitions for the Office of Mayor and City Council, surpassing their goal by nearly doubling the signatures needed.  All petitions were due to the City Council by 4 p.m. on April 3rd.

The Green Team candidates running for reelection are First Ward Councilman Chris James, Second Ward Councilman Romal Bullock, Fourth Ward Councilwoman Tyshammie Cooper and Fifth Ward Councilwoman Alicia Holman.  Bergson Leneus is seeking the City Council seat for the Third Ward, which is vacated by Ted Green for his mayoral run.

Council President Green said, “I want to thank everyone, especially the citizens of East Orange for their support of my candidacy of Mayor.”  I also want to thank Chairman Jones, Honorary (Campaign) Chair Assemblywoman Emerita Sheila Oliver, the campaign team, and all the volunteers, especially the East Orange County Committee, who have contributed a great deal of time and effort to engage East Orange citizens in the process. The teamwork to reach this milestone was great and most importantly, we took time to not only get signatures but more importantly to listen to what people have to say about taking East Orange forward.  In closing, Green said, “I am humbled and honored to have your support, and the opportunity to seek the office of Mayor.”

Essex County and East Orange Democratic Chairman LeRoy J. Jones, Jr. said “The goal for our candidate for Mayor, Ted Green and The Green Team was to file the official petition with 4,000 signatures.  He continued, “I am pleased and humbled to report that we have surpassed our goal of 4,000 signatures and today are turning in petitions totaling 4,817 signatures. This significant and final number speaks to the energy and support of Ted’s candidacy and that of the City Council candidates.

In addition, members of The Green Team seeking reelection plus the addition of new City Council candidate Bergson Leneus for the Third Ward, filed petitions totally 2,853 for a total number of signatures for Mayor and Council of 7,680. According to the campaign, approximately 10,000 people voted for Mayor in 2013. Today’s numbers are significant because The Green    Team collected nearly ¾ of the projected turnout for this upcoming Election Day, June 6. The   Team turned in nearly half the number of signatures as there are voters anticipated to vote in June.

Chairman Jones added that The Green Team reached this record-breaking number with volunteers – this is generally not the case in a major campaign.

Mayoral candidate Green said, “Going forward, we will continue to have an open dialogue with the citizens of East Orange.  It’s their voices, their ideas and their commitment that will be the engine to help move East Orange forward, particularly at a time when federal resources for cities like East Orange, are at stake.”

Election Day is Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
