EAST ORANGE, NJ - The East Orange YMCA is ensuring that local families have basic resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Y asked for donations of diapers in various sizes from community members last week, and after receiving dozens of boxes and bags, staff, some of their family members, and other local volunteers sorted and packaged the diapers and wipes. Nearly 100 families were provided a week’s supply of diapers. The Y distributed the packages on May 23 at the Y in a drive-through pick-up format, also hand-delivered diapers to 30 families.

“It is so heartwarming to see the community come together in times of crises to ensure that families in need are able to receive basic necessities during these challenging times,” said Washima Redding, Executive Director of the East Orange Y. “Due to job loss, hoarding, and the pandemic, there’s an increased need for diapers in our community, and the East Orange YMCA is working to provide relief for our families.”

The East Orange Y is the latest branch within the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges to hold a diaper drive. The West Essex YMCA’s Peanut Shell Early Childhood Learning Center in April collected more than 1,200 diapers for Livingston’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors organization, to assist families who were not able to buy diapers in bulk when the coronavirus outbreak began.

The Y continues to support the community during the pandemic by providing families access to critical needs like food and diapers, as well as child care. The East Orange Y and Peanut Shell ECLC both opened in April to provide full-day care to families of essential workers, and will continue to do so through June.

Established in 1885, the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges invests in its diverse communities to promote wellness, safety and quality of life for children, adults and seniors. Its seven branches in East Orange, Livingston, Maplewood, Hackensack, Hardyston, Stillwater and Wayne are committed to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility through an array of programs. Some 35,000 people belong to the Metro Y, which awards more than $2.8 million annually in direct and indirect financial assistance.
