EAST ORANGE, NJ – This November, the East Orange Public Library (EOPL) is proud to announce its partnership with the “Fade to Books” literacy initiative bringing free books to local barbershops for children to read and keep. FTB is a Long Branch Public Library program that the state adopted and decided to “roll out” to all libraries throughout the state of NJ via a grant.
As a recipient of the grant from the New Jersey State Library, the EOPL will bring diverse children’s books to a number of participating barbershops in East Orange including: Johnson Barbershop (30 S. Harrison Street), GTI Square Barbershop (426 Central Avenue), and Ulysses Unisex Barbershop (159 N. Clinton Street). Each participating barbershop will feature the books on a bookshelf for their customers to peruse. The library encourages barbershop patrons to participate in the program by sharing the titles/authors of the books read via a provided bookmark which can be submitted for prizes.
“The barbershop has a long standing presence as a welcoming place within its community,” says EOPL Children’s Librarian, Marissa Lieberman. “Having the opportunity to give books to children to read and keep as they wait for a haircut is a fantastic step in further developing life-long readers.” Customers are encouraged to keep the books they’ve read following their barbershop visits, with new additions to be provided by the library while supplies last.
