NEWARK, NJ - After initially confirming attendance to a non-partisan forum set for Monday at Essex County College, all of the Republican candidates except Hiram Singh cancelled.
The forum was to feature the declared Republican candidates who would present their vision for New Jersey and engage in a question and answer from the audience.
“While Essex County is largely Democratic, we felt it was important to hear all of the candidates regardless of party. Now if the Republicans will not speak to the residents of Essex County in front of the election, how can we expect them to fairly represent all residents of the state if elected? “ said Deborah Smith Gregory, Newark NAACP president.
“The multiple forums was to give an opportunity to get to know the candidates and their positions as well as highlight the differences in their proposed polices to improve the condition of our communities,” explained Shelton J. Prescott, Grand Master of the Prince Hall Masons of NJ.
The second forum will feature the Democratic gubernatorial candidates. It will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Essex County College. The Governor’s Primary Election day is Tuesday, June 6, 2017.
The last forum of the series will present both the Democratic and Republican winners of the primary election as well as Independent candidates. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017.
