NEWARK, NJ - Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that members of the Fugitive Apprehension Team (F.A.T.) have arrested Kahleel D. Trent, 35, of Irvington, and David B. Canadas, 37, of East Orange, for a double-shooting that occurred on Saturday July 1, 2017.
At approximately 2:38 p.m., police responded to University Hospital on a call of two males arriving with gunshot wounds. Each was treated for non-life threatening injuries and released. Both victims had been shot in the 700-block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Major Crimes detectives developed sufficient evidence to identify Kahleel D. Trent and David B. Canadas as suspects in this incident and obtained a warrant for each suspect’s arrest.
F.A.T. detectives arrested both men yesterday without incident. Both men are charged with two counts each of Criminal Attempt of Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Conspiracy to Commit Murder, as well as Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Canadas is also charged with Receiving Stolen Property for possession of a stolen cell phone.
These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
