NEWARK, NJ - Hundreds marched down Broad Street today as part of nationwide protests being held  against President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

The "Families Belong Together" protest started at city hall and was organized by immigration advocacy groups, including Make the Road NJ, New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice and Wind of the Spirit. Elected officials also joined the rally, including Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman and Sens. Bob Menendez and Cory Booker.

The state's first lady, Tammy Murphy, also joined leaders at the steps of city hall. She noted her husband signed an executive order which prohibited state resources from being used to assist the Trump administration's family separation policies.

She said her husband supports all families "regardless of immigration status."

Demonstrators called for an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE was formed following the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Trump recently started a "zero-tolerance" policy, which caused undocumented parents to be separated from their children at the border. The president, facing backlash, eventually signed an executive order which allowed for families to be detained together.
