On Wednesday, August 8th, the Newark AntiViolence Coalition will participate in a memorial rally for Kofi Owens, the East Orange teacher who was tragically slain in a shooting on August 3rd.         

The rally will take place on So.16th Street, between Central Avenue and 9th Avenue in East Orange at 6pm.

Among those joining the rally will be his wife Gloria Owens, his mother, other family members and friends; and will include Owens’ students from previous years, young people from the HUBB, East Orange Mayor Ted Green and East Orange Councilman Casim Gomez.

According to police, Owens was sitting in his parked car on Friday evening when someone pulled up on the car and opened fire on him. His son was also wounded with gunshots to his leg.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Owens, 45, was a very popular teacher at East Orange’s STEM Academy. He was married and a father of two. 

“In our culture, one of the greatest losses a community can endure is the loss of great teacher,” Zayid Muhammad, NAVC media advocate.
