#BlackGirlMonologues Debuts to a Sold-Out Crowd at Cicely Tyson

EAST ORANGE, NJ - On Saturday December 12, 2015, artistic history will be made at the Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts when Yolanda Hughes and her troupe converge on the school’s auditorium with their debut performance of #BlackGirlMonologues.

This event will mark the first time any commercial event has ever registered a sold-out performance at the state-of-the-art Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts 800-seat main stage theater. Furthermore, the event will also mark the first time a live audience will have the privilege to experience #BlackGirlsMonologues; a collection of 13 monologues delivered by 13 women on 13 subjects representative of the struggle, progress, love and labor that is indicative of the ‘black girl’ experience.

But there is another intriguing ‘first’ that is not immediately obvious. We had the opportunity to speak with several of the cast members: Jennifer Kween Moore, Kimberly Thurston-Brown, Kenyatta Dasent (the only male cast member) and Elder Sharronda Elise Harrell-Thompson. As a result of their interview we discovered that #BlackGirlMonologues is much more than a play. Elder Harrell-Thompson remarked, “It’s not a play, it’s a monologue.” Mr. Dasent added, “this is a first.” Truly a reality show. #BlackGirlMonologues is a real, live, no holds barred conversation, that will enlighten, encourage and inspire the audience to make positive changes.

Each of the cast members were equally excited about the production and the impact that it will  undoubtedly have. The interviews ended with the question of what will the audience leave with? Everyone chimed in, but the consensus was summed up by Jennifer Kween Moore and Kimberly Thurston-Brown in their depiction of the misnomer that black women are ‘catty’ and incapable of working together in harmony. They spoke of the significance of the monologues offering an avenue to culture change and a shift in thinking. “It’s okay to be who you are”.

The event is set for Saturday, December 12, 2015, organized by the social events company, BrownShugar Enterprise and hosted by Rae- Shan Nate’ Barclift of I Ain’t That Chick with special guest, Dr. Bob Lee of WBLS. Red carpet arrivals will begin at 5:00 pm and will lead into the venue’s VIP Seating & Picture area followed by the first act to commence at 6:00 pm.

For those unable to attend this showing, there is another event planned in April of 2016. Stay tuned more more information.
