Respected Author and Lecturer Rev. Dr. Marvin McMickle to Speak at New Hope Baptist Church of East Orange

EAST ORANGE, NJ – Rev. Dr. Marvin A. McMickle, president of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School and distinguished novelist, will present a lecture on “Deacons in Today’s Black Baptist Church,” based on his latest book which covers the same topic.

The event is scheduled for Friday, December 8 at the church, which is located at 144 Norman Street in East Orange. The cost is $15.00 per person and includes lunch at 12:00 p.m. and the lecture, which starts at 2:00 p.m. A book signing will follow the lecture.

During the program, Rev. Dr. Mickle will discuss the scriptural basis and historical context for the deacon ministry in the black Baptist church, and address the practical issues related to this ministry today. “I actually cannot think of a more appropriate discussion as the role of deacons has dramatically changed over the years.” “With his experience both as a longtime pastor and an esteemed professor, Rev. Dr. McMickle brings a unique perspective on the emergence of a new generation of African-American officers’ role in addressing various complex issues in today’s churches,” said Rev. Dwight D. Gill, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church of East Orange.

Rev. Dr. McMickle is a graduate of Aurora University in Aurora, Illinois with a B.A. in Philosophy. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ. He was also awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio as well as the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Payne Theological Seminary in Wilberforce, Ohio.  He served as pastor of St. Paul Baptist Church of Montclair, New Jersey for ten years and as Senior Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio for nearly 25 years. Rev. Dr. McMickle was also a Visiting Professor of Preaching at Yale University Divinity School in New Haven, CT. He has also served on various boards, received several awards and is the author of many books and numerous articles.

The event, which is sponsored in partnership with Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, NJ and Messiah Baptist Church in East Orange, NJ, is open to all current deacons as well as those who feel possibly called to become a deacon.
