ORANGE, NJ - Rochelle Brown, co-owner of Southern Comfort Café (SOCO), invited me to come out and enjoy their delicious Southern Cuisine, the friendly SoCo Café hospitality and the soulful sounds of their live band.
Rochelle remarked, “We are not only having the fabulous Valerie Adams & The Dimensions Band tonight, but we have a Special Guest that will be doing a book signing and a cameo performance”. It was none other than Daryl Brown, son of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown.
As SOCO staff delivered plates southern cuisine, the band played soulful sounds in the background; and the atmosphere was somewhat electric. I watched the faces of the customers all around the room and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Valerie Adams and The Dimensions transformed the four walls and the hearts of the crowd into a down home familiar R& B nightclub.
Ms. Adams completed her set and introduced Daryl Brown to the stage. Obviously when you mention you are James Brown’s son, you have huge expectations to fulfill.
He greeted the crowd warmly and thanked them for coming; he reached for his guitar and went on to crank out crisp medley of R&B songs by the Godfather himself. The Dimensions Band provided the big band background sound as Daryl Brown played lead guitar; he sounded like he could have been one of James’ top guitarist. Later that evening we found that thought to be more than a notion.
After about a straight 20 minute set of singing and jamming with his guitar , Daryl’s cameo appearance was done he again thanked the crowd, and invited them back to his book table to purchase an autographed copy of his book entitled, “My Father the Godfather”
