STATEMENT FROM MAYOR TED R. GREEN ON INTRODUCTION OF LEGISLATION BY ASSEMBLYWOMAN BRITNEE TIMBERLAKE TO PROVIDE RENTAL AND MORTGAGE RELIEF TO RESIDENTS IMPACTED BY COVID-19

“During this unprecedented public health crisis, no resident – whether they rent or own – should fear being evicted from their home. In a time when compassion and humanity are also on the front line, it is appalling to think that any landlord would threaten to evict a tenant whose economic circumstances have been impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic. No one should have to make a choice between buying food or paying rent. If landlords are receiving governmental assistance and forbearance options, then it is only right that similar opportunities be offered to renters without retribution. In East Orange, I am encouraging our landlords to work cooperatively with our tenants to weather through this storm and I applaud Assemblywoman Britnee Timberlake for stepping up to provide immediate relief to both homeowners and renters across the state.
