EAST HANOVER, NJ – Novartis hosted its 19th Multicultural Teen Corporate Mentoring program for over 175 students from around 40 New Jersey schools at its East Hanover campus to help the students make better, more informed career choices.

Students in grades 8 through 12 spent three days in April participating in a range of activities designed to help them navigate future career choices and understand the benefits of working within a multicultural corporate environment.

The Novartis program has mentored more than 1,400 students since it began in 1994.  The program was shaped around strengthening team-building skills, introducing deadline-orientated tasks and honing presentation skills.

“This program teaches students about leadership and the importance of mentoring and networking,” said Wanda Sims, Associate Director of Philanthropy at NPC. “I am proud that every student that has participated in this program has successfully enrolled in a college program. Through this program we try and teach our students that with perseverance and hard work they can achieve their goals.”

This year’s student program included a field trip, community service project, a patient-advocacy challenge, and a college and career fair.

"The program taught me how to work with a group of people I had never met before and how to communicate effectively," said Maya Patel, a junior at Bergen Arts & Sciences Charter School. "Going out into the field with a salesperson and speaking with doctors helped me realize that this is the work I want to do."
