EAST ORANGE, NJ – East Orange Mayoral Candidate Ted R. Green and the Green Team have announced a plan to review, enhance and add new programs for seniors in the city.

“My goal as Mayor is to explore new ways to engage, support and develop more programs and services to help improve the quality of life for seniors in East Orange,” said Ted R. Green, Candidate for Mayor.

Over the last several months, Green said he has taken more time to sit with seniors to listen to their concerns, ideas and recommendations on how to better serve them.

The primary areas Green will focus on include health and wellness, housing, special programs and services, public safety, arts and culture,  and overall engagement and mentorship for young people.

Green said that most seniors he has met with or corresponded with him are pleased with the level of programs and

services currently offered in East Orange.  In fact, he indicated that East Orange seniors say due to the sound programs and services, more seniors from outside East Orange are coming to the city to take advantage of the effective and fun programs and solid services being offered to East Orange residents.

Green pointed to the number of accomplishments of the current Senior Services Department and how important it is to review best practices and use them to strengthen programs and services; including the Disability Unit to help seniors, along with partnerships with Rutgers and Seton Hall to provide professional services for seniors.

In addition, he said they are exploring additional transportation services to ensure our seniors can get to their destinations safely.

Green said one of the most important things we can do is to ensure seniors are getting the exercise and companionship needed to enjoy life so we are exploring the art and crafts program, the new golf initiative and an expanded exercise program, including bowling.

With healthcare being a major focus of new initiatives, Green said he wants to solidify the diabetes program and to work closely with East Orange General Hospital, particularly with their women’s health initiative and other program to keep men healthy, as well.

Green added that one of the most important thing to seniors is where they live; “so we have developed a new, effective and efficient” relationship with the tenant leaders in senior housing to ensure we support their needs and listen to their concerns.”  This is the first such partnership in East Orange.  The tenant leaders earlier this year, endorsed Ted Green and the Green Team.

In addition, Green added that he has met with many senior home owners with the hope of working with them against foreclosure of their properties and to help them identify ways to beautify and upgrade their homes; including working with Property Maintenance to ensure resources are available, even snow removal – a program Green started as a Councilman many years ago.

Education is also key to keeping seniors healthy, according to Green.  He said is exploring a partnership with the Board of Education for seniors to mentor students in East Orange.  He said, “We have a strong and celebrated history in East Orange, one that should be shared to instill civic and local pride in our city and the people – he said, this is a unique jewel our seniors can pass on to our youth.”

Election Day is Tuesday, June 6.  Green is running on Line A with his running mates; First Ward Council Candidate Chris James, Second Ward Council Candidate Romal Bullock, Third Ward Council Candidate Bergson Leneus, Fourth Ward Council Candidate Tyshammie Cooper and Fifth Ward Council Candidate Alicia Holman.  For more information about Ted Green and the LINE A candidates, visit them on line at TedRGreen.com or on facebook at Greenin17.
