SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - SOMA knitters: there's a new yarn store in town. The Local Yarn Store held its grand opening and ribbon cutting with members of the community and South Orange Village Trustees Walter Clarke and Karen Hilton there to welcome the new store to South Orange Village.

The store's owner, Irina Lester, is a South Orange resident, and not surprisingly, an avid knitter. "Opening a yarn store has been a dream of mine for a good six or seven years. I found myself amassing a wealth of knowledge and skill about yarn and knitting that my family couldn’t stand to hear about anymore," shared Lester.

Matt Glass of the South Orange Village Center Alliance welcomed all to the ribbon cutting, and stated that The Local Yarn Store is the latest in a number of new stores in downtown South Orange.

“We have a new retail corridor here with beautiful stores run by amazing people," said Glass, adding his congratulations and wishing The Local Yarn Store "many years of success and happiness."

In addition to a wide array of yarns, the store also carries knitting and crochet needles, buttons, and other accessories. The store features a children's playroom with a dollhouse and other toys, as well as a large sitting area.

The store plans to hold a variety of crochet and knitting classes for all levels, including beginners. "I’ll have classes that cover all the bases: knitting and crochet, beginner to advanced, for both children - as young as age five - and adults," stated Lester.

The store will host a BYOB open fiber-craft night every Friday from 6 p.m., said Lester, with the first one being held this Friday, November 24.

"The last two weeks have been remarkable - I’ve met the most amazing people and found myself humbled by the beautiful community we share and continue to build," said Lester.

The Local Yarn Store is located at 15 Village Plaza in South Orange and is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.. The store is briefly closed from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
