NEWARK, NJ - On Monday, November 24, 2014, The Shauger Group (TSG) teamed up with New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford to donate over 240 turkeys to families in Newark. From the back of TSG’s “Weatherford Tailgate Bus,” TSG and Weatherford delivered forty of the turkeys to South Ward residences on Elizabeth Avenue in Newark.

TSG and Weatherford’s donation came as part of the First Annual Turkey Drive by the Believe in Newark Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization founded in 2014 to better the lives of people in the Newark community.  The Turkey Drive was an effort by Believe in Newark and the City of Newark to gather and donate over 2,400 turkeys to families for Thanksgiving.  Turkeys were distributed to needy Newark families at designated pick-up locations in each of the City’s five Wards.

The following day, TSG also donated an additional 100 turkeys for families at Newark’s Apostles’ House, a shelter for homeless and at-risk families.  For the past few years, TSG has worked with Jean Weiner, Board Member and director of volunteers at the Apostles’ House, and Harrington Park School District’s Annual Turkey Drive to help provide Thanksgiving meals to Apostles’ House families.  This year, Harrington Park students were on hand again to prepare bags of Thanksgiving meals, using food donated by TSG and other members of the community.

TSG has been heavily involved with the Apostles’ House over the years, from having completed its extreme makeover to having performed a multitude of renovations and repair work.  In addition, the Shauger family has spent the last several Christmas mornings at the Apostles’ House, spending time with the families in the shelter and giving them presents for their families.

Immediately after bringing the turkeys to the Apostles’ House, TSG also gave an additional 50 turkeys to the City of East Orange, which is home to TSG’s headquarters.  The City is in charge of distributing the turkeys to local families in need.

“I truly know how these families feel, having grown up in a single-parent home,” said Donald Shauger, Executive Vice President of TSG.  “We depended on food from others around the holidays, so it’s an amazing feeling to be able to give back so many years later.”

TSG also has celebrated the beginning of this holiday season by contributing to a fundraising effort by the New Jersey Devils to help those who are underprivileged to attend events at the Prudential Center.  The Devils organization and Prudential Center are hoping to raise enough funds to have 50,000 children and their families participate in the goings-on at The Rock.  The Devils are meeting all contributions with a like amount, so we hope that our donation will help bring laughter and smiles to many!

Lastly, several members of TSG and their families will also be going to the Prudential Center on Thanksgiving morning to help serve breakfast to underserved members of the community.  As volunteers, they will be joining Prudential Center staff members in providing a meal to a charitable organization chosen by the Devils organization.

As we move through the holiday season, check www.shauger.com to learn about what else we are doing for the community!
