We are all so busy these days that it’s easy to start taking things and people for granted and not appreciating them as fully as we should — to the point where we might actually lose them as a result. Appreciating the little things in life can be amongst the best ways of preserving them.
One way of developing an appreciation of them is through mindfulness, which means that you pay attention to the present and live in the now - not the past or the future.
2. Focus on Your Health
We tend to take our health for granted - until we become ill. That being the case, it is important to appreciate our good health, and take care of it.
As you walk down the street, enjoy the sensation of striding along, swinging your arms, and the feel of the heel and toe contact of your feet on the ground. Enjoy your comfortable and supporting walking shoes, the fresh air and nice weather, the location you are at, and so on. There are many people who would love to be able to walk but can’t do so because they are disabled.
3. Focus on Your Nutrition
Nutrition is an important cornerstone of our health. However, we tend to wolf down (fast) food as we run from one thing to the next during the day. Take the time to appreciate the little things by not trying to multitask at meals. Turn off the TV, get away from the email and smartphone, and slowly and thoroughly chew your food. Notice the taste, the sensation as you chew and swallow, and so on.
4. Appreciate Your Loved Ones
If you have a partner or spouse, chances are they do a lot for you each day. Do you say thank you often enough? Do you pay attention when they are speaking? Or do you rush to speak and ignore what they are saying? Are you in the same room but fiddling with your cell phones or watching TV instead of talking?
If this sounds anything like your current relationship, it’s time to show your appreciation more. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of time, money or effort. Saying thank you, sending an ecard, picking up their favorite flavor of ice cream in the store, can all help. All good relationships have mindfulness as an important component so each person will feel valued.
Paying attention to the little things in life will mean focusing on them. What we focus on, we value. Once you start to focus, it will be easy to appreciate them and be mindful of what an abundant life you have.
On the subject of appreciating what you have, next time we will look at keeping a gratitude journal.
